Visit To Bampton School

Report by Dick’s Son Giles King-Smith:

Devon is a huge county! Back in June I visited Clawton School, which is almost in Cornwall, and on September 17th I was at Bampton School, on the edge of Exmoor, and right next to the border with Somerset.

Bampton is a delightful little town, surrounded by wooded hills, and the Primary School sits in its own wooded grounds, with masses of space for the children to play in, and a new-ish school building that looks a bit like a spaceship. The hall is a lovely big space, as you can see from the pics.

As usual, there were plenty of good questions, from the Infants as well as the Juniors. I read from “George Speaks” and “Sophie’s Snail”, and was able to present the school with some new editions – “The Sheep Pig”, “Ambrose Follows his Nose”, and “Harriet’s Hare”. And, as you can see, Wilfred went down a storm. It’s quite mind-boggling to think that Dick’s toy rabbit (or is he a hare?!) is well over 100 years old.

A huge thank-you to Mrs. Newman and the school staff (and the children) for making me so welcome!

Here’s a picture of Wilfred in close-up…
